The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced through a fact sheet released on October 31 that it is again delaying the new Medicare Part D rule requiring physicians and other prescribers to enroll in Medicare before prescribing drugs under Medicare Part D.

The rule was finalized in March 2014, but its enforcement date has been delayed four times since then. CMS announced that it will implement a multifaceted, phased approach, delaying the full enforcement date from February 1, 2017 to January 1, 2019.

While CMS says it is committed to the implementation of the prescriber enrollment requirements, it also recognizes the need to minimize the impact on the beneficiary population and ensure that beneficiaries have access to the care they need. More information on Part D prescriber enrollment is available on the CMS website.
