On August 25, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the 2015 performance year quality and financial results for accountable care organizations (ACOs). Of the 400-plus ACOs participating in various Medicare programs, only 31 percent of the ACOs generated savings, totaling $466 million. However, the savings for 2015 exceeded the $411 million savings generated for 2014.

In addition, CMS found that ACOs participating in the past two years improved on 84 percent of the quality performance measures used. In a related fact sheet, CMS noted that ACOs have had significant financial impact by aligning financial incentives with improved care coordination.
