The Penn State Data Center in Harrisburg reports that commuting to work constitutes approximately one-fifth of all transportation trips taken in the United States.
Those who take public transportation in and out of Philadelphia tend to speak fondly of it.
Randall Schauer explained that he used to ride the train when working for a Philadelphia firm.
"I took the 5:18 a.m. out of Malvern, which was the earliest train east," he said. "I took the Great Valley Flyer back at 5:47 p.m. The Flyer originated in Suburban Station, so there was no need to stand on the platform, you could just get on early, and the first stop was Paoli - fast."
"Still it was 14 hours away a day," Schauer noted and explained that he read most of the time. "It was before the big explosion of apps and social media, so not a lot of electronics."
Schauer recalled a time when he was on a train that struck and killed a pedestrian near Wayne one night, or as the crew described it when they told the riders why they were stopped: "Trespassers. That was an interesting, though haunting, experience," Schauer said.
