David W. Clark, Chair of American Bar Association's (ABA) Standing Committee on Gun Violence, served on behalf of the ABA as a contributing editor on this joint publication, authored by the executive staff leadership of eight national health professional organizations and the ABA, through its Standing Committee on Gun Violence. This article is a first step in a cooperative effort aimed at reducing gun violence. Firearm-related deaths and injuries are a major public health issue in the United States. The interdisciplinary panel of medical, public health, and legal authors examines the consequences of gun violence and proposes recommendations, research, and strategies to reduce firearm-related injuries and deaths.
