James L. Griffith was quoted in the Medscape article "5 Easy Ways To Improve Compliance That Many Doctors Don't Do." Full text can be found in the February 11, 2015, issue, but a synopsis is below.

Noncompliance continues to be one of the most vexatious problems in medicine. Many physicians take the attitude, "If patients don't—or won't—follow my instructions, whose fault is that? It certainly isn't mine."

Whether physicians offer adequate instructions to patients is often questionable. Many patients who are prescribed medications receive no information whatsoever about them.

"It's amazing about doctors' instructions, doctors always seem to recall spending a great deal of time on instructions, and the patient says they were never told anything by the doctor. The only person who discussed anything with them was the nurse, and some patients say they didn't know what she was talking about," noted James L. Griffith.
