Vidcode is video effects coding program and tutorial designed specifically to teach girls to program.

I found it on Kickstarter. It was founded by Alexandra Diracles and Melissa Halfon as a way to teach girls to program.

While there are other coding tutorials (scratch.mit.edu, code.org), what is fascinating about this one is that it has a targeted audience (girls) and a real-world application (editing videos). Vidcode was designed with the premise that girls enjoy editing videos and while they are doing that, vidcode can teach them javascript. This is a great example of how selecting a particular audience and tailoring your product to that audience can set a product apart in the marketplace.

So what kind of intellectual property do they have (either Vidcode or its users)?

1) copyright in the Vidcode application

2) copyrights in the video effects created using the application

3) trademark for VIDCODE for video editing software

4) branding, targeting girls specifically but also instagram users

5) trade secret in their kickstarter backer list and collected user information

6) potential patentability of the Vidcode software or its components

Great idea, and the selective branding is terrific. Can't wait to see the final product following the Kickstarter campaign.  What kind of intellectual property do you have in your company?

There is a great article with additional information about the Vidcode project at Forbes.com.
