Some corporates attempt to transform themselves by turning to global consultants for an off-the-shelf technology upgrade. The decline of bricks-and-mortar retailers or print journalism has shown the approach is just not fast enough. Others engage with startups. Whether it's an informal relationship, an innovation lab or an accelerator, the approach challenges corporates' legacy culture.

Law firm Mishcon de Reya launched MDR Lab, its own accelerator, in 2017. Ping, a startup in the inaugural cohort, tested its timekeeping tool with the partners themselves. It was a real challenge to traditional working practices going back many years. Mishcon's partners have now invested their own money in Ping. And all in under a year.
