It is this continued renaissance that fills the Liverpool delegation with confidence as we return to MIPIM, the international property festival in Cannes, with our largest delegation, a real energy in the public-private sector collaboration, and involvement from the wider City Region in the form of Wirral MBC and the Liverpool LEP. Collaboration and confidence, a great partnership.
Perhaps for the first time in recent years, Liverpool expects to be making some major announcements at MIPIM to help showcase the city region to a wider audience. We know that a number of major schemes are in the pipeline, notably the Cruise Line Terminal and a new stadium for Everton Football Club, but perhaps MIPIM may be too soon for these to have been finalised. More news from the Knowledge Quarter and more growth plans from Liverpool's headline sponsor Signature Living seem inevitable, but I could be proved wrong. I'm also really looking forward to hearing updates about the Garden Festival Site, the Liverpool and Wirral Waters developments, and wider news from Wirral about their transformation.
A continued theme for Liverpool is the importance of the waterfront. Last year, mayor Joe Anderson led a MIPIM session with other invited city leaders such as Belfast, Copenhagen and Oslo. This year, the mayor will be hosting a larger forum (10 waterfront cities in total, including the likes of Belfast, Bordeaux and Lisbon) with the aim to continue the debate about great waterfront cities and how each can learn from the successes (and indeed failures) of others. In a similar vein, Liverpool City Council chief executive Ged Fitzgerald will be joining a MIPIM panel debate hosted by Leeds about the value of culture and leisure in a city – this will bring together a city vying to be capital of culture in 2023 and a city seeking to host the Commonwealth Games in 2026 (or even 2022 if Durban do pull out).
Liverpool's continued renaissance will build upon the connections formed at MIPIM – both with great international waterfront cities and our Northern Powerhouse colleagues. Collaboration and confidence, a great partnership.
