The environment calendar highlights key dates for proposed and existing legislation and policy and closing dates for consultation papers relating to major environment issues in the EU and England.

It will provide a useful tool for environment managers tracking new legislation for the purpose of implementing an environment management system such as ISO 14001 or EMUS.

It will also be helpful for those in environment technologies industries seeking new opportunities by highlighting upcoming legislation.

Key developments this month include:

  • The Waste Management (England and Wales) Regulations 2006 No 937 are due to come into force on 15 May. These regulations will bring the UK into line with the Waste Framework Directive (75/442/EEC) and the Landfill Directive (1991/31/EC).
  • The European Commission aims to publish a proposal for a Framework Directive on Soil Protection by the end of May. This proposal would form part of a package on soil, encompassing a "Thematic Strategy" on soil protection, as well as an extended impact assessment.
  • 15 May is the closing date for DEFRA’s Consultation on the options for creating a streamlined environmental permitting and compliance system. This consultation is seeking stakeholders’ responses on how to combine the pollution prevention control and waste management licensing regimes.
