The Sentencing Council has published the definitive guidelines on environmental offences, which aim to promote a consistent approach to sentencing.

The guidelines, which set out clear starting points and ranges, aim to ensure that the level of fines given to offenders is proportionate to the seriousness of the offences they have committed. It is anticipated that corporate entities which commit more serious offences can expect a higher fine than is presently the case, whilst for individuals and smaller organisations the current fining levels will be maintained.

Our full review of what your business can expect from this new sentencing approach can be found here. The guidelines will come into effect on 1 July 2014 and be viewed here.
