The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has served an Improvement Notice in relation to a cooling tower at Wheatfield Road, Edinburgh for allegedly failing to adequately control the risk of legionella. The HSE has asked North British Distillery Company Ltd to ensure appropriate controls are in place by 29 June 2012.  The Notice can be appealed by the company within 21 days of issue.

A number of people have contracted legionella in Edinburgh over the last week and some remain seriously ill.  No direct link has been established as yet between the cooling tower to which the notice applies and those who have contracted legionella.
