On 24 November 2015, a Russian Su-24 jet was downed by an air-to-air missile, fired from two Turkish F-16 fighters in response to a violation of Turkish airspace, pursuant to rules of engagement. The Russian aircraft crashed in the Bayirbucak region of northern Syria.
