Associate Wisdom Hon from Ogier's Hong Kong office will speak at the prestigious China Offshore Shenzhen Summit tomorrow as part of a panel discussion on data security and beneficial ownership transparency, developments in the legal and regulatory framework impacting client data and how jurisdictions like the BVI, Cayman, Guernsey and Jersey are flourishing due to their ability to innovate in these areas.

With the recent introduction of legislation including the BVI's Beneficial Ownership Secure Search System Act 2017, the spotlight is firmly on the question of client data security and how to balance this with legitimate access to data under various regulatory regimes.

Wisdom will focus on the agility of the BVI and certain other offshore jurisdictions' approach to this issue, including continually assessing the international landscape, getting input from close contact with clients and their advisors, and developing/evolving the legal and regulatory framework to meet client's needs and concerns.

Wisdom said: "The China Offshore summit is an unrivalled opportunity to discuss the major issues impacting the offshore private client and trusts world with leading practitioners in the Asia market, and I look forward to exploring in depth the salient issues of data transparency and security in light of major regulatory developments.

"It is of course impossible to decouple the conversation about regulation and data transparency from the broader context of such elements as independent courts and judiciaries, democratic government and political stability and the rule of law, so I will be framing my analysis of data security in light of the BVI and select other jurisdictions' excellence in these areas."

China Offshore is one of the biggest events in China focussing on offshore funds and wealth planning, bringing together industry specialists to discuss and debate the major issues impacting the offshore private client world.
