On January 2, PCPD fined a large grocery chain HK$3,000 for using
customers' personal data in direct marketing campaigns without
obtaining prior consent, in violation of section 35E(1) of the
Personal Data Ordinance. In its ruling, the Privacy Commissioner
noted that "[a]ppropriate training must be provided to its
staff members to ensure their awareness of and compliance with the
direct marketing provisions under the Ordinance."
