McCarthy Tétrault's Competition/Antitrust & Foreign Investment Group congratulates Matthew Boswell on his 5-year appointment as Canada's next Commissioner of Competition, which was announced today. Commissioner Boswell has been serving as Interim Commissioner since last May.

Commissioner Boswell brings a wealth of experience to this role. Having served as the Senior Deputy Commissioner heading each of the Mergers and Monopolistic Practices and the Cartels and Deceptive Marketing Practices branches of the Competition Bureau, Commissioner Boswell is widely viewed as an effective and straight-shooting leader in this area, and his former role as a Crown Attorney for Ontario's Ministry of the Attorney General and the Ontario Securities Commission speaks to his skills as an enforcer.

Since his time at the Bureau, we have seen increased cooperation and the fostering of strong relationships with both domestic and foreign agencies, and have welcomed the Bureau's emphasis on transparency and consistency by, among other things, the publication of clear and meaningful enforcement guidelines, more frequent issuance of position statements, and genuine engagement with the competition Bar and business community more broadly.

McCarthy Tétrault's Competition/Antitrust & Foreign Investment Group has worked closely with Commissioner Boswell over the course of his years at the Bureau, and will bring the benefit of the insights and experience gained in order to continue to provide our clients with best-in-class advice and representation in competition law matters.
