July 12, 2018 – Foreigners applying for a Canada visit visa are increasingly likely to see their applications denied, new data shows.
The rate at which Canada rejects visit visa applications increased to more than one-in-four in 2017, according to the federal immigration department.
Given Canada's reputation as an open and welcoming country on the world stage, the figures come as a surprise.
In 2017, nearly 500,000 visit visa applications were denied, some 26 per cent of the total.
This compares to 18 per cent in 2012, 19 per cent in 2014 and a 2016 total of 21 per cent.
