With the changing of the seasons comes about another change. One that may put a bit more money in your pocket come holiday season. Come November 22, 2017, the Federal Child Support Tables are being updated to reflect recent changes to the Income Tax Act as they affect child support. This is the first such update since the release of the 2011 Tables, and the updated Table will have to be used to determine any child support owing after November 22, 2017. Support obligations owing before November 22, 2017 will be calculated according to the 2011 formula.

With the change in child support quantums, amounts of spousal support calculated on the basis of the 'with child' formula will also change.

With the change in the law, payors and recipients will have to determine if their rights and obligations for support have changed and to what extent. Of course, the amount of child support payable is based on the number of children, the payor's income and the province that the support payor lives in. It is always recommended that you speak to a lawyer if you have any questions about your entitlement to (or obligation to pay) child support.
