A Toronto-based soldier, Master Warrant Officer Mardie Reyes of the 7th Toronto Regiment, Royal Canadian Artillery was charged last week with seven counts of voyeurism, after allegedly recording video of Canadian armed forces members between May 2012 and June 2016.

Under the Criminal Code, the punishment is as follows:

Voyeurism

162 (5) Every one who commits an offence under subsection (1) or (4)

(a) is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding five years; or

(b) is guilty of an offence punishable on summary conviction.

Reyes will face criminal charges and be tried under Canada's military justice system.

Since the video camera discovery in June 2016, Reyes was arrested in October of 2016 following a military police investigation. In February 2017, he had his full time contract terminated and was barred from service.

Reyes served 26 years in the military and was deployed multiple times to Afghanistan, including once to the Philippines as part of the Canadian Disaster Response Team following super typhoon Haiyan.
