Yesterday, Canada's federal government announced that it is suspending the implementation of the private right of action in Canada's anti-spam legislation, known as CASL. The private right of action, which would have authorized private lawsuits for breach of certain provisions of CASL, was to come into force on July 1, 2017.

The balance of the legislation remains in force, and businesses must comply with it, pending an upcoming parliamentary review of CASL.
