In our previous post we talked about the guidance issued by privacy commissioners for the developers of mobile Apps. The Federal Commissioner has also issued privacy tips for online gaming. While the guidance for the development of mobile Apps was aimed at developers, these guidelines are aimed at gamers. They provide information on a number of frequently asked questions about privacy issues, what kind of personal information is collected by online game sites, what the sites may be doing with that information and how to take control over your own personal information. The document also provides some basic tips for the game site developers and explains some of the obligations that developers have with respect to obtaining consent for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information, how long personal information can/should be retained and concerns about data linking, profiling and data mining.

According to the Privacy Commissioner's research, more than 50 % of US adults (ie. Over the age of 18) play video games . More than 20% play every day.Among teenagers, the percentage who play video games is even higher – 97%. That is a lot of gaming and a lot of personal information that may be collected by online sites.
