The Brazilian Patent and Trademark Office (BPTO) published Resolution 136/2014 ("Resolution") in its official gazette No. 2282, regarding the issuance of digital trademark registration certificates. Since last year, the BPTO has not been issuing hard copies of trademark certificates, and had given no estimation of when it would resume issuing new certificates.

Pursuant to the Resolution, all new trademark registration certificates will be issued exclusively in digital format (PDF) with an electronic signature issued by an accredited certification authority. Also, after the publication of the resolution, all duplicates and new certificates issued due to the renewal of the trademark registration will be digital. The digital certificates will be available online through the internet, will be monitored by the BPTO and be password protected. Such electronic documents will have the same value as hardcopy certificates previously issued.

Pending certificates can be requested to be issued in digital format.
