The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) released a statement on January 9 that the ICD-10 updates that went into use on October 1, 2016 created problems with CMS's ability to process certain data in the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) for the fourth quarter of calendar year 2016. Therefore, CMS has decided not to apply the 2017 or 2018 PQRS payment adjustments of 2% to any eligible professional or group practice that "fails to satisfactorily report for CY 2016 solely as a result of the impact of ICD-10 code updates on quality data reported for the 4th quarter of CY 2016."
CMS also released FAQs about the ICD-10 code updates that affect PQRS quality reporting.
